Christmas Dinner Popcorn

Walkers have been adding festive flavours to their crisps for years.  So why not add seasonal flavourings to our popcorn as well?

Time for some Christmas Dinner Popcorn!  You’ll be amazed how easy it is!

Christmas Popcorn – Is That A Thing?!

There’s plenty of sweet spiced Christmas popcorn recipes around, and some delicious ones on the market too.

But it turns out adding the flavours of Christmas dinner to the nation’s favourite movie snack is really rather easy.  And extremely tasty!

And with all that Christmas movie watching to enjoy, we definitely need some festive snacks to hand!

Healthier than its fried potato counterpart, the flavoured popcorn market has exploded in recent years.

No longer just for the cinema -so many of us enjoy a handful of popcorn as a not-too-naughty snack.

And as you know we’re rather partial to a pop of Christmas whatever the time, day or month.  So we started thinking … how could we make our popcorn Christmassy?!

Does It Really Taste Like Christmas Dinner?

Yes!  We’ve conjured up all our Willy Wonka scientific food flavour skills for this one.  And we believe we’ve done it.

Blind smell and taste tests have varied between roast poultry and stuffing.  So we think we’re there.  Let us know what you think!

It’s one big beautiful herb fest that will have the aroma of turkey and all the trimmings wafting around your home in no time!  And stuffing lovers beware: your mouth will be watering as soon as the sage and onion smells take hold.

We’ve added a tiny bit of sugar to counterbalance the savoury, and the overall effect will have Christmas dinner lovers diving straight back in for a second handful!

Is Christmas Dinner Popcorn Vegetarian?

It absolutely can be vegetarian!  The original recipe uses turkey stock cubes.  However the fabulous thing about this Christmas popcorn flavouring is its flexibility.  So sub out those poultry stock cubes for vegetable ones instead and simply enjoy those fabulous roast dinner stuffing flavours!

Popping the Corn

Now we’re all for a fun festive twist on a classic but no one needs to be making a huge mess just for a quick snack.  So this Christmas dinner flavouring can be added to freshly popped corn in the pan but also microwave salted popcorn too.

You just need to adjust the stock cube used to account for the salt already in the popcorn.

But our all time favourite way to pop corn is with a popcorn maker!  They make THE BEST gifts for tweens, teens, and popcorn enthusiasts of any age!  My elder son and his friends can attest to that.  And they are just so much fun.  And SO easy to use!

Easy Gifting & Bulk Preparation

We all know that popcorn is best served fresh.  But when you want that bowl of popcorn isn’t always when you have the time or inclination to start pounding herbs with your pestle and mortar!

Fortunately the festive herby mix for this popcorn lasts fabulously well, just as with all dried herbs.  So why not multiply up the recipe and make a jarful of flavouring to leave in the cupboard.  Then whenever the mood takes you, simply add to your fresh popcorn until you get the taste you like.

It makes the perfect gift too!  Add to a hamper of delicious goodies.  Or make up a Christmas movie treats bundle with as many embellishments as you like!

Ingredients

  • 1 bag microwave popcorn OR 1/3 cup of popcorn kernels
  • spray cooking oil sunflower or rapeseed oils work best
  • 1 OXO turkey stock cube use chicken if you can't get turkey & use low or no salt crumbly stock cubes if pre-salted popcorn
  • 1 tsp dried sage
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp dried onion granules
  • ½ tsp dried rosemary
  • pinch black pepper
  • pinch sugar

Instructions

  • In a mortar, crumble the stock cube with the pestle until it is a powder.
  • Add the thyme, sage, onion, rosemary, pepper and sugar. Grind the mixture until it creates a fine powder. (The finer the mixture, the more easily it will stick to the popcorn.)
  • Cook popcorn according to instructions and place in a very large bowl (with room for mixing).
  • Whilst the popcorn is still warm, spray liberally with oil. Sprinkle some of the flavouring mixture over the popcorn (approximately a quarter) and toss.
  • Repeat spraying oil and adding flavouring until all the herb mixture has been used up and the popcorn is well coated.
  • Serve immediately.

Notes

If you can't find turkey stock cubes, replace with chicken. Replace with vegetable stock cubes for a vegetarian version.
Be sure to use low or no salt stock cubes if using pre-salted popcorn.
OXO cubes are ideal because they are completely dry and crumble easily. Do not use squashy stock cubes as they won’t grind down to a powder that can be sprinkled.
It is worth taking the time to grind the flavouring mixture as finely as possible as the finer the powder, the more easily it will stick to the popcorn.
