There’s something wonderfully cosy about the scent of gingerbread, isn’t there? Warm, spicy, a little nostalgic… it just smells like Christmas. And my homemade gingerbread sugar scrub brings that same comforting aroma to your self-care routine, leaving skin soft, smooth and smelling utterly delicious.
It’s seriously easy to make: you can pull this together in about 15 minutes using ingredients you probably already have in the cupboard. Quick, affordable, and makes a perfect little festive gift for teachers, friends, or anyone who deserves a bit of pampering.
What You’ll Need
One of the brilliant things about this sugar scrub is that it’s pretty much all store cupboard basics required to make it. You may even be able to get going right away, without a trip to the shops! You’ll need:
1 cup soft dark brown sugar (approx. 220g)
¼ cup cold-pressed coconut oil (approx. 50g)
1 tbsp ground ginger
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp ground nutmeg
½ tsp ground cloves
½ tsp vitamin E (optional)
2 mason jars or clean small jam jars (200g each)
2 wooden scoops
Labels, ribbons, and decorative finishes
Answering the FAQs
Why Sugar, Not Salt?
When it comes to scrubs, sugar is the gentler choice. Its smaller, rounded grains make it perfect for exfoliating without irritating, especially on sensitive skin. Salt scrubs are great for tougher skin (like on feet) but can be too abrasive for regular use and may sting if you have any small cuts or nicks.
Plus, sugar naturally helps draw moisture into the skin so you’ll be left feeling smooth and hydrated rather than dry.
Why Soft Dark Brown Sugar?
Soft dark brown sugar gives this scrub its gorgeous caramel hue and rich, toffee-like scent. It’s the secret to that authentic ‘gingerbread’ depth.
But beyond that, it’s also slightly softer than granulated sugar, giving the scrub a luxurious, sandy texture that’s gentle but effective. And dark brown sugar tends to be slightly more moisturising than its lighter counterpart.
That being said, if you only have light brown sugar to hand, you can absolutely use it. Just be aware that the aroma and colour will be a touch lighter.
Why Coconut Oil?
I love coconut oil! How about you? Cold-pressed coconut oil is a natural skin hero: hydrating, antibacterial, and soothing. It melts beautifully into the skin, leaving it soft and nourished without feeling greasy. You’ll also notice a gentle coconut aroma, which blends deliciously with the gingerbread spices to create a scent that’s subtly sweet.

Homemade Gingerbread Sugar Scrub makes a fabulous standalone gift or part of a spa gift basket.
How To Make It
It’s truly as easy as combining the dry ingredients and then adding the wet. Stir to break down any lumps and ensure it’s fully combined. And you’re done! Ta-da!
In terms of consistency, you’re aiming for damp sand. If it feels too oily, add a little more sugar; too dry, put a little more coconut oil into the mix. Adjust the balance to your personal preference; there’s no hard and fast rules here.
The Spice Mix: More Than Just Fragrance
Each spice brings its own wellbeing benefits to the mix:
Ginger. Naturally warming and stimulating; helps boost circulation for that healthy glow.
Cinnamon. Known for its comforting scent and gentle antiseptic qualities.
Nutmeg. Adds a subtle sweetness and may help soothe tired skin.
Clove. Antioxidant-rich and deeply aromatic, giving the scrub a real festive kick.
Together, they create that unmistakable gingerbread scent: warm, spicy and perfect for winter pampering.
To make the sugar scrub even more nourishing, consider adding a little Vitamin E into the mix. It’s rich in antioxidants and will help protect the skin from dryness and environmental stress. It supports the coconut oil in leaving skin soft, supple, and hydrated.

Mixing in the Coconut Oil to make Gingerbread Sugar Scrub
How To Use The Sugar Scrub
- Stir the scrub before each use to mix up any settled oil.
- Apply a small handful to damp skin (hands, feet, legs… wherever needs some TLC).
- Massage gently in circular motions for 1–2 minutes.
- Rinse off with warm water and pat dry.
Your skin will feel beautifully smooth and lightly scented. Avoid using immediately after shaving or on broken skin.
Storage Tips: Keep your scrub at room temperature and out of direct sunlight. Because there’s no water in the mixture, it should last a few months easily. Just make sure to use a clean, dry spoon or scoop each time.
