‘and it happened to be painted red’

The Jingle Bells Christmas Shop Story

Less than 10 minutes from the golden sands of Shanklin beach, Jingle Bells has been a familiar face on the High Street for 10 years now.

Christmas-enthusiast Lisa opened the shop with her partner Derek on April 1st 2011, embracing the inevitable bah-humbug comments at the arrival of a year-round festive store in the town.

Already owners of gorgeous Pencil Cottage opposite, Lisa had been running a pop-up Christmas market in the tearoom there each autumn as the summer season drew to a close.  ‘We’ve still got the original banner actually which went over the front of the shop saying ‘Christmas at Pencil Cottage’’.

So when Jingle Bells’ current building became available ‘and it happened to be painted red’, added Lisa with a smile, it was meant to be.  ‘It’s been phenomenal’, she added, ‘I don’t think anyone expected it to be as successful as it has been.’

Lisa designs her own bauble for the shop each year, including this year’s iridescent ‘under & over the sea’ beauty.

Eager to embrace all things ‘island’, the shop worked with a nearby glass-blowing factory in pre-covid times and is currently in collaboration with a local pottery to create a range of festive exclusives.  Watch this space!

Why the name?

‘That was my Mum & Dad’s idea.  It means we’ve got our own theme tune too.’

Lisa’s parents sound just as enthusiastic about the Christmas season as their daughter!

‘I have Santa in my phone’, explains Lisa who often gives Father & Mrs Christmas (aka Dad & Mum) a ring when she has a small visitor in need of a little Christmas magic.

‘Thank you’ whisper the departing parents of the young customer, ‘We just wanted one more year!’.
